Technology which ties a city together in ways previouly thought impossible in order to reduce or eliminate city expenses associated with current telecommunication needs. (telephone, internet, cell-phones,...) Municipalities can decide which of the features best suit their overall goals for their community. A major decision has been the level of implementation of the Wi-Fi internet portion of the system. This allows a city to gain many benefits ranging from provideing the lastest technological tools for first repsonders to wireless internet services for the entire community. The CCA has discovered the following models adopted by different cities.
- • Municipal use only. No services sold.
- • Municipal run service for use by businesses and/or residents.
- • A municipal owned, but privately run, service for business or residents.
- • Wholesale the excess bandwidth not used by the city, to the private sector for resale.
Private needs in the residential sector. Through wireless, even the smallest community can enjoy: broadband internet at high speeds, mobility to use a wireless internet connection anywhere within the city, television services equal to those provided by cable or satellite, telephone services for both in-home systems and the new “dual-band” Wi-Fi/Cell phones that operate on two frequencies. All at a cost competitive to any “wired” services.
Each city is unique in its make-up, needs, and existing services available. The CCA is the conduit that helps obtain a wireless broadband system that is flexible enough to be responsive to the needs and desires of each city. By providing a broadband system that is robust enough to cover a variety of uses, this gives the city the ability to pick and choose what is best for them. Should the city’s needs change, again the system is flexible and allows the city to change its use of these services without having to incur additional infrastructure charges.
- • A potential new revenue stream for the vity through the sale of internet services.
- • Reduce of eliminate city expenses associated with current tltcommunications needs.
- • A city-owned broadband utility system coupled with the replacement of meters and the addition of AMI technology can pay for itself and generate added revenue for the city.
- By performing the "leg work", the CCA can help educate a city to the technologies, strategies, and models available and help the city implement a custom designed solution that will both increase the ability to manage the city's assets and to improve its citzen's quality of life.
